Sonic XtremeHere is one of the many rendered and cleaned up 16-color sprite sheets for Sonic the hedgehog. 16 frames and 16 rotations allow Sonic to run round both left-right and in-out 360 loops. | Sonic the HedgehogThe first 3d model of Sonic the Hedgehog created for a home videogame. Built in Autodesk 3DS4, it was designed to be rendered as a 64x64 sprite and mimic the beautiful 'fake' glossy rendering of the original hand drawn sprites. | TridrillA slow but deadly enemy, pointy on all sides! |

T RexMy favourite enemy for Sonic Xtreme. Fast, deadly but oh so cute. | PiranhaFast and with pointy teeth. Need I say more? | OrcaFather was an Orca, mother was a space shuttle. Don't ask me how that happened! |
LitebugThis enemy would help illuminate some of the darker areas. | JetarangA flying blade... very nasty. | FSpinWhen bopped on the head, this enemy would spin uncontrollably and be a hazard to all around it. |
FDomeA static turret gun. | DingoFast and strong, the Dingo would charge and knock you flying. | CrabPincers at the front and a drill at the back, your only hope was to hit it cleanly from above. |
BomberA deadly flying enemy, it would locate your position and drop a never ending supply of bombs on you. | Amy RoseWhat would have been the first female playable character in a Sonic game. Amy holds a ring in her hand which could be thrown as a projectile at enemies. As rings equal lives/health, you were literally judging whether to throw your life away or not! |
Sonic Xtreme was a unreleased game for the Sega Saturn console, that has taken on almost mythical status as a lost classic.
The truth is more mundane. It was simply an overambitious project that was constantly redesigned both within and outside the small team, that simply didn't have the number of people, resources or technology at the time to pull off.
As lead artist, I was tasked with the job of being the first person to build and animate Sonic the Hedgehog (and all the other characters) in full 3d, rendering down to more traditional 2d sprites.
